Hygienist Information

The hygienist's role is to provide treatments and information about the structures that hold your teeth in, this includes bone levels, ligaments and gum.

One of the main reasons for tooth loss is gum disease. Your hygienist will explain that plaque is the cause of gum disease and will tailor your home care regime to your specific needs.

What treatment does The Hygienist do?

Hygienists carry out very careful cleaning of your teeth to remove any hard deposits which are contributory to gum disease and which would hinder improvement of the health of your gums, but most importantly, she will educate you on any specific areas you may need to concentrate on more at home. Your own x rays will be used to help you understand more about gum disease and to look at any areas which may need more detailed care from your hygienist.

Why can’t the Dentist do this Treatment?

Some dentists do carry out this work , however, many recognize that the hygienist has been specifically trained to carry out treatment and management of gum disease.

Can I ask my Hygienist about other Dental Issues?

Yes, our hygienists can give you lots of information about other issues. Diet advice to prevent decay, problems that acidic foods/drinks can cause, effects of alcohol and tobacco on the mouth and teeth along with many other things you may want to discuss.

Does Every Practice have Dental Hygienists?

No, we are very fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced hygienists, hygienists can only see patients referred to them by a dentist but treatment planning is carried out with dentist and hygienists working as a team to provide the best care possible. We value our hygienists highly and think they play a major role in your overall dental care.
