The hygienist's role is to provide treatments and information about the structures that hold your teeth in, this includes bone levels, ligaments and gum.
One of the main reasons for tooth loss is gum disease. Your hygienist will explain that plaque is the cause of gum disease and will tailor your home care regime to your specific needs.

Hygienists carry out very careful cleaning of your teeth to remove any hard deposits which are contributory to gum disease and which would hinder improvement of the health of your gums, but most importantly, she will educate you on any specific areas you may need to concentrate on more at home. Your own x rays will be used to help you understand more about gum disease and to look at any areas which may need more detailed care from your hygienist.
